EVALUATION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF LANGUAGE ARTS POLICY AS CONTAINED IN THE CURRICULUM IN NIGERIAN SEC. SCHOOLS

 The National Policy of Education[2011] states that the importance of language is a means of promoting social interaction and national cohesion and preserving culture. Thus, every child shall learn the language of the immediate environment. Furthermore, in the interest of the national unity, it is expedient that every child be required to learn one of the 3 major Nigerian languages. Also for smooth running interaction with our neighbours. It is also important that every Nigerian child learns French language. Thus, French shall become the second official language in Nigeria.
   Thus in Nigeria Sec. Schools, the core language course include;
A-Junior Secondary Schools
    -English
    -French
   -L1[Mother tongue,or languaage of the immediate environment]
   -One major Nigerian language other than L1

B-Senior Secondary School
-English
-One major Nigerian language

    Now to some extent, this policy has been implemented and to some extent, it has not been implemented in Nigerian secondary schools. In some schools, they are faced with lack of personnel, that is there are no teachers to teach other Nigeria languages or French
 and even if there are teachers, once they are transferred, they teaching of such language/subject stops.
    Also , sometimes the students of the minority tribal group in Nigeria hardly show interest in Nigeria languages and Foreign languages thereby making the teaching and learning of such subject difficult. Also, in some secondary schools, it is only the language of the immediate environment that is being taught.
  Therefore in evaluating the language art policy in Nigeria secondary schools, one can say to some extent that it has not been fully implemented.
